Hi, I’m Ruth

Qualified primary school teacher, home educating mum and the person behind Play Nest Learning.

I spent six years in the classroom, with a real passion for the early years and the magic of those first steps in learning. I loved planning creative, playful lessons. It was one of the best parts of the job, though if I'm honest, there wasn't always as much freedom to do it as I'd have liked.

When I became a mum I knew something had to change. I couldn't see how I could give the job everything it deserved whilst also giving my son everything he needed. So I left the classroom. I now have two boys. When my eldest started showing an interest in reading and numbers, I found myself looking for ways to bring learning into his world of play. Just like I had in my early years classroom, but this time on our living room floor.

I started Play Nest Learning because I kept hearing the same thing from parents. They wanted to support their child's learning at home but didn't feel qualified. And I think a big part of that came from the idea that home education means replicating school, sitting at a table, following a lesson plan, doing it ‘properly’. It doesn't. Research consistently shows that young children learn best through play. It's not the easy option or the alternative to real learning. It is the learning. And that's something every parent can do.

That's what Play Nest Learning is here to show you. You don't need a structured programme, a dedicated learning space or hours of preparation. You just need a little knowledge, everyday materials and the willingness to get down on the floor and play alongside your child.

Welcome to the community.
